To inaugurate our first ever permanent exhibition space, Her Clique is proud to present MALCRIADAS, a group show featuring 21 contemporary, women and non-binary artists whose practices embody the essence of the Portuguese word that loosely translates to “bad girls.” As we welcome viewers to our physical space in Lisbon, MALCRIADAS brings together some of the artists Her Clique has worked with over the years to support vital charities worldwide. United by their shared interest in breaking down patriarchal barriers, challenging social norms, and amplifying critical — often uncomfortable — questions of systemic injustices and toxic conventions, the fierce artists in the show represent the past, present, and future of bad girls in the art world.
While inspired by the 1994 Bad Girls exhibition at the New Museum and others of the same ethos, MALCRIADAS considers the legacy of feminist art not with a definitive survey, but rather with a general grouping of these groundbreaking artists that invites provocative dialogue. To this end, we plan for the show to evolve in new editions with different artworks and artists over time, creating a platform that responds to social concerns in our continuously — and rapidly — changing society.
Visits are by appointment only. Please e-mail hi@herclique.com to set up your visit.
Founded in 2020 by Izabela Depczyk as a curated platform for specially commissioned artworks, Her Clique has opened its flagship exhibition space in Lisbon, Portugal.
Her Clique represents a diverse group of women and non-binary artists who work across different media including painting, sculpture, textile, performance, photography and video art. The gallery is located in the heart of Lisbon’s historic Alfama district, the building dates back to the 16th century and has been fully remodeled to be the art salon that brings together the local and international community of current and next generation artists and collectors.
