Throughout her provocative paintings and collages, Betty Tompkins (b. Washington D.C., 1945) explores the intricacies of sexual contact. In softly airbrushed paintings, she depicts photorealistic, black-and-white scenes of intimate, explicit, and erotic imagery. This subject matter has proved contentious—in 1973, French customs officials barred these “Fuck” paintings from entry, citing pornographic content. Text has also been integral to Tompkins’s practice; over the past decade, she has made paintings that depict words people use to describe women and painted #MeToo apologies over found imagery. Tompkins is now recognized as a pioneering force in the development of feminist art. She has exhibited in London, New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Vienna, Brussels, and Copenhagen, and her work belongs in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Centre Pompidou, and the Islip Art Museum.
